As more carbon is emitted into the atmosphere, and the earth continues to become hotter, the coral reefs begin to see a bleak future. As the water warms, the coral reefs are practically bleached to death. They have a low tolerance to the increasing heat because of it rapid rate. If the coral's are preconditioned and eased into warmer water, they may survive but this is not the case. It is estimated that a significant amount of them will be gone by 2050. I think that this is an important environmental problem because more than 1500 types of fish use the coral reefs for shelter. Without their existence, their lives would also be altered for the worse.

CFLs have taken over american life these past few years. They are more efficient, cost effective, and energy friendly than traditional lightbulbs. Although they have many pluses, consumers all over the world absolutely hate them. The problem has gotten so bad that many retailers have stopped selling them all together. They are slowly disappearing and LED's are swooping in with a 237 percent up rate. Luckily, they are even more environmentally friendly and their prices have dropped throughout the years. I believe this is important because this shows that society is slowly becoming more environmentally conscious and friendly and this switch proves that.
From November to February young male camels enter a "rut" and mating occurs. During this time, the males are extremely dangerous and locals are often scared. Scientists have taken it upon themselves to remove the love struck males (3-6 years old) from the rest of the fray to prevent damage. Sadly this camel is in heavy decline because it can only reproduce every two years. It is also prey to many different types of animals. Because of these circumstances, the Wild Camel Protection Foundation has decided to step up. They have decided that the only way to solve this problem is to remove the three- to six-year-old thrusting males from the fray. I believe this is important because these camels in particular can drink heavily concentrated salt water. They can also survive no less than 43 atmospheric nuclear tests making them pretty special. It would be a shame if they died off. The U.S. fish and wildlife service has allowed america to transport 18 elephants from Africa. They will be put on display at various zoos and will be used for breeding. This decision however, has not gone uncriticized. Connecticut-based animal advocacy group Friends of Animals filed a lawsuit against FWS. They argue that these 18 elephants are unlawfully taken from their natural habitats and will experience sadness and misery in their nee habitats. I believe this is important because these elephants will most likely experience shorter life spans and undesirable circumstances. If this is brushed off as ok, similar incidents could follow. In 2002, feeding waste to pigs was banned in Europe due to a huge disease outbreak. Food Policy however, has come up with great evidence on why the ban should be lifted. "...much land could be spared from farming if pigs were fed treated, recycled food waste." Adding food waste to pig diets could reduce the amount of land that is farmed for other pig food (grains).

"Climate scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research present evidence in a new study that they can predict whether the Arctic sea ice that forms in the winter will grow, shrink, or hold its own over the next several years." Although scientists know that ice will continue to retreat, changes in the North Atlantic ocean circulation could allow for some ice extension that will remain constant. Using the NCAR-based Community Earth System Mode, scientist believe that decadal predictions for the arctic can also be made in the future. I believe this is important because this new method ensures greater accuracy for a longer duration of time. Knowing the ice's behavior years in advance can lead to more ways of preventing it. |
Coal has been a major support to chinas economy for years now. However, oversupply has led to major price drops of the product. This has resulted in major coal companies failure. "Coal was the main industry of Shanxi province." I think this is important because this could potentially make china rely on other forms of energy. Their use of coal has contributed to major pollution and this could be a turning point for them.
Indian Star tortoise takes the world by storm and now leads the nation in tortoise trade! This trade however is not always legal..."Back in 2004, one estimate figured about 10,000 to 20,000 were being taken illegally from the wild over the tortoises’ entire range, which encompasses India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka." The trade has sadly led to the decline of other rare species. "...the radiated tortoise and the ploughshare tortoise, of which there are fewer that 200 adults left in the wild." The trade can result in juvenile tortoises to be taken out of their natural habitat before they can fully develop and reach their reproductive years.
I believe that this is important because this tortoise is adorable. It didn't get the name Star for nothing. If it were to go extinct thousands of tortoise loving fanatics including myself would die because of this detriment plagued upon this hopeless world. Its extinction would also seriously mess up the food chain. Like I said before rarer tortoises would die and most humans would probably see no reason for life.
After earths last ice age, large-scale warming events about 14,700 ago occurred rapidly and triggered loss of oxygen in the North Pacific. This could mean that low-oxygen areas will expand as the ocean warms in the future. As the ocean continues to warm, it has been hypothesized that low oxygen dead zones will grow. "The new study found a clear connection between two prehistoric intervals of abrupt ocean warming that ended the last ice age with an increase in the flux of marine plankton sinking to the seafloor, ultimately leading to a sudden onset of low-oxygen conditions, or hypoxia."
I think this is important because many species living in the ocean will be harmed. "This study shows that the ecological consequences of climate change can be massive and can occur pretty fast, with little warning." Many food chains can be destroyed and an abundance of species can die.

UCLA studies show that many people are switching to plug in and hybrid cars, shrinking our ecological footprint. The benefits for people who switch are endless. Consumers will gain generous tax rebates and lose the need to constantly spend money on fuel. The government is also rewarding plug in drivers by opening up hundreds of miles of carpool lanes. "...more than 24,000 plug-in electric cars and hybrids in the four urban areas from 2010 to 2013, or about 40% of the total of such vehicles." The permit is said to even expand to new cities.
I think this is important because cars that burn gas are a major contributor to todays pollution. Switching to a greener cars can heavily reduce global warming.

Recently, big storms have been popping up throughout the world and new studies seem to blame humans. 14 out 28 big environmental storms/droughts have been linked to human activity. Scientists found out that half of these problems were associated with climate change, something humans are greatly exasperating. "Although debate continues over accuracy and details, scientists now say their improved modeling tools in recent years have made it easier to tease out climate change effects from the seeming chaos of the weather." The disasters are spread throughout the globe and have now affected all 7 continents.
Hopefully this will show people that we should take further steps to limit climate change. More human linked storms can only lead to more catastrophe and casualties. It is important to limit things that increase the climate such as greenhouse gases. The actions we don't think twice about are finally catching up to us in a gruesome way.

Around 100,000 fires are burning causing a toxic haze. Many schools and public events have been closed due to health risks. A copious amount of greenhouse gases are being released due to the fires being peat fires. These fires omit 10x more methane than a regular fire. "Every dry season, parts of Indonesia’s Sumatra, Kalimantan and Papua areas are reduced to smoking, burned-out landscapes, as palm oil and paper-and-pulp plantation farmers burn forests to cheaply clear agricultural land." Even worse, the monsoon winds blew the haze northeast from Indonesia. This is actually a bigger problem then it may seem. Global warming before was a big enough problem on its own and now this is contributing even more. 7,000,000 people die each year because of global warming/air pollution. What is sad is that a majority of it can be easily stopped.
2015 is measured to the 2nd most extreme fire year in the past decade! Most wouldn't see fires as big threat to our environment but a new project to measure effects of severe boreal wildfires and the loss of permafrost on ecosystems is now beginning. These fires have raised concern for NASA. '"In the boreal region, there is a thick organic layer on the surface comprised of litter and soil, that in some cases is hundreds to thousands of years old," Mack said. "Will more fires and hotter fires burn that layer and release it to the atmosphere and how deep will it burn into the soil?"' To figure out more about the problem, NASA is launching a 10 year project called the Arctic Boreal Vulnerability Experiment.
I believe that this is important because project will potentially find out the vulnerably of the arctic, a place where climate change is a huge problem. It will show how big of a problem fires actually are to the environment and may lead to heightened preventions.

The rocket frog, a species already endangered has the potential to go extinct before expected. Biologists are forced to evacuate the frogs because of a volcano that could erupt soon. This frog species was known to be abundant until just recently. They only have one population left and the reasons behind that remain a mystery. However, disease and climate change have been hypothesized. The volcano that is threatening the species was thought to be dormant until it puffed up smoke just recently. "Gathering will get easier soon. When the rains come—any day now—'the frogs’ vocalizations will give away their hiding places,'"
I believe this is an important problem because it shows how we are becoming a society that is more prepared for a sudden change of events, Without the rocket frog, everything that eats the rocket frog could go extinct and everything that the rocket frog eats will become overpopulated. For this reason it is an incredibly important problem.

A rare and unpredictable flood recently hit South Carolina leaving families devastated. 40,000 people are going without water and it is confirmed that 11 people have already died. Residents report "non stop rain" and "never seeing the river rise that high." Luckily, the heavy rain has stopped; however, that does not mean that North Carolina residents are out of the woods yet. Although they are slowly recovering from the gruesome storms, many houses and its possessions are still destroyed forever.
I believe this is important because many families are put in very bad situations. Many children struggle to find water. Millions are lost because of damages caused by the flood, hitting their economy hard. This also serves as a warning to individuals to build stronger buildings and more secure households. This will all lead to a prepared society for when it hits again.
The sumatran rhino species has been quickly declining to a near extinction. Back in their prime they roamed Southeast Asia. They are also known for making high pitched noises and are the smallest species of rhino which just makes them incredibly cute. They are also one of the few species of rhinos who have hair and are soft. Surprisingly they are the closest surviving relative of woolly rhinos which died off thousands of years ago. The species has already gone extinct in Malaysia and less than a 100 still survive in Indonesia. They have been declining because of poaching. Their horns are very valuable and are even used to symbolize trophies. There also has been a lot of habitat loss causing the species to separate. Because of the separation, Rhinos seldom met and rarely bred. I think this issue is important because the decline of the rhino species also means the decline of other species such as tigers, orangoutang, and elephants. Not to mention, they are incredibly cute. |
As technology continues to become more advanced, it becomes easier to bring back extinct animals because of genetic engineering. With animals evolving and disappearing because of global warming, this has been seen as a plausible answer. Scientist believe that because of the global warming caused by humans evolution has actually sped up even more; However there has been much debate. "One of the problems conservationists face is that there’s no clear definition of what a species is."
I believe this is important because the food chain could potentially be restored in the future. Animals crucial to the environment could be brought back to life. The reason that any of this is necessary in the first place is mostly because of humans. It is important to try and help other species affected from our actions.

Scientist predict that if humans use up all the natural resources, the earth will get hot enough to where all of Antartica could actually melt. Surprisingly, this could all happen very fast. Maybe as soon as just 1000 years. This can all lead to the ocean level to rise at exponential rates. Scientist predict about 1 foot each decade which is much greater than previously believed.
I think this is important because this extreme rise in sea level could lead to many deaths. Many states and cities will be lost such as Florida, New Orleans, Houston, New York, Venice, Tokyo, and many more. Not only can it hurt the ecosystem, its living things, and the food chain, it can also the ruin the planet as a whole.

People living in Ontario next to freeway 60 breath in the terrible air because of the bad air pollution caused by cars. That area has been identified to have the worst lung damaging soot in the area. People living in this area experience higher levels of lung related problems such as asthma. There is not much officials can do about it either since rerouting the freeway isn't really a plausible options.
I think this matters because it shows how one little freeway can actually damage the quality of life for some humans. This shows how much seemingly insignificant cars and overall human activity can so badly hurt the surrounding environment even to point where human lives are being damaged.

Researchers recently found out that the plastic threat to bird life is a bigger than scientist believed. Back in 1960, plastic was only found in 5% of wildlife but by 2050 researchers believe
the numbers will reach up to 99%! Luckily, they have begun thinking of solutions for the spreading problem. "Improving waste management can reduce the threat plastic is posing to marine wildlife." Scientists note that there has been a substantial increase in plastic pollution over the past 4 decades.
I believe that this is important because not only does it lead to many bird deaths, it can harmfully affect the food chain. The plastic problem damages wildlife and drops earths beauty.
