A 7.8 earthquake hit the coast of Ecuador on April 17th killing close to 250 people. To make matters worse a tsunami warning was issued. The plates at fault here include the Nazca and Pacific plates. The Nazca subducts under the Pacific which has led to the formation of the Andes mountains and other harmful earthquakes. The shaking was so strong that buildings collapsed 300 miles away and movement could be felt as far as Columbia. I believe that this is an important environmental event because it reminds the public how necessary it is to construct and help other countries construct earthquake resistant buildings. |
