Around 100,000 fires are burning causing a toxic haze. Many schools and public events have been closed due to health risks. A copious amount of greenhouse gases are being released due to the fires being peat fires. These fires omit 10x more methane than a regular fire. "Every dry season, parts of Indonesia’s Sumatra, Kalimantan and Papua areas are reduced to smoking, burned-out landscapes, as palm oil and paper-and-pulp plantation farmers burn forests to cheaply clear agricultural land." Even worse, the monsoon winds blew the haze northeast from Indonesia. This is actually a bigger problem then it may seem. Global warming before was a big enough problem on its own and now this is contributing even more. 7,000,000 people die each year because of global warming/air pollution. What is sad is that a majority of it can be easily stopped.

2015 is measured to the 2nd most extreme fire year in the past decade! Most wouldn't see fires as big threat to our environment but a new project to measure effects of severe boreal wildfires and the loss of permafrost on ecosystems is now beginning. These fires have raised concern for NASA. '"In the boreal region, there is a thick organic layer on the surface comprised of litter and soil, that in some cases is hundreds to thousands of years old," Mack said. "Will more fires and hotter fires burn that layer and release it to the atmosphere and how deep will it burn into the soil?"' To figure out more about the problem, NASA is launching a 10 year project called the Arctic Boreal Vulnerability Experiment.
I believe that this is important because project will potentially find out the vulnerably of the arctic, a place where climate change is a huge problem. It will show how big of a problem fires actually are to the environment and may lead to heightened preventions. The rocket frog, a species already endangered has the potential to go extinct before expected. Biologists are forced to evacuate the frogs because of a volcano that could erupt soon. This frog species was known to be abundant until just recently. They only have one population left and the reasons behind that remain a mystery. However, disease and climate change have been hypothesized. The volcano that is threatening the species was thought to be dormant until it puffed up smoke just recently. "Gathering will get easier soon. When the rains come—any day now—'the frogs’ vocalizations will give away their hiding places,'"
I believe this is an important problem because it shows how we are becoming a society that is more prepared for a sudden change of events, Without the rocket frog, everything that eats the rocket frog could go extinct and everything that the rocket frog eats will become overpopulated. For this reason it is an incredibly important problem. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2015/10/151014-rocket-frog-volcano-ecuador-animals-conservation-science/ A rare and unpredictable flood recently hit South Carolina leaving families devastated. 40,000 people are going without water and it is confirmed that 11 people have already died. Residents report "non stop rain" and "never seeing the river rise that high." Luckily, the heavy rain has stopped; however, that does not mean that North Carolina residents are out of the woods yet. Although they are slowly recovering from the gruesome storms, many houses and its possessions are still destroyed forever.
