2015 is measured to the 2nd most extreme fire year in the past decade! Most wouldn't see fires as big threat to our environment but a new project to measure effects of severe boreal wildfires and the loss of permafrost on ecosystems is now beginning. These fires have raised concern for NASA. '"In the boreal region, there is a thick organic layer on the surface comprised of litter and soil, that in some cases is hundreds to thousands of years old," Mack said. "Will more fires and hotter fires burn that layer and release it to the atmosphere and how deep will it burn into the soil?"' To figure out more about the problem, NASA is launching a 10 year project called the Arctic Boreal Vulnerability Experiment.
I believe that this is important because project will potentially find out the vulnerably of the arctic, a place where climate change is a huge problem. It will show how big of a problem fires actually are to the environment and may lead to heightened preventions.
