Indian Star tortoise takes the world by storm and now leads the nation in tortoise trade! This trade however is not always legal..."Back in 2004, one estimate figured about 10,000 to 20,000 were being taken illegally from the wild over the tortoises’ entire range, which encompasses India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka." The trade has sadly led to the decline of other rare species. "...the radiated tortoise and the ploughshare tortoise, of which there are fewer that 200 adults left in the wild." The trade can result in juvenile tortoises to be taken out of their natural habitat before they can fully develop and reach their reproductive years.
